Murdoch Newspaper Proudly Endorses Australian Coup

Like no other media outlet in his worldwide empire, Rupert Murdoch's The Australian national broadsheet newspaper is the voice of Rupert Murdoch. He's lost tens of millions on The Australian over the years, but Murdoch keeps the newspaper going because he knows the influence it has, not on the Australian people, but the rest of the Australian media, business and public servants. Rupert Murdoch decided earlier this year that Kevin Rudd was to be deposed as prime minister of Australia, and his most of his stable of commentators rallied to the cause.

If you under any doubt that Rupert Murdoch marshaled his Australian media to help drive Australia's elected prime Kevin Rudd from office, toss those doubts aside right now :

"Mommy! Get The Oil Off!"

By Darryl Mason

Fucking hell. Thousands of Americans are swimming around in this toxic shit :

Morons like this guy below are telling Americans it's okay to swim, and to take their children swimming, and for people from other states to come and swim in this oily sticky, sickening stew, too. The tourist dollar is all that matters :

Don't forgot, the oil only now poisoning Florida's beaches is the stuff that gushed from the Gulf back in late April.

The EPA has been slow to act to warn Americans about how toxic this oil sludge is, sludge that will be washing up on beaches for months to come, even if a miracle earthquake closed off the multiple gushers of oil and methane tomorrow, 5000 feet down on the sea floor of the Gulf of Mexico. Now the EPA advises the following :
n Avoid entering areas where oil can be seen or smelled.

n Avoid direct skin contact with oil, oil-contaminated water and sediments.

n Do not swim or ski in areas affected by the oil spill, and if traveling through the area by boat, take precautions when hoisting the boat anchor. If oil makes contact with skin, wash it off with soap and water.

n Do not harvest or eat fish found dead, fish with oily residue or fish that have a petroleum odor.

n Avoid boating through oil slicks or sheens.

n Young children, pregnant women, people with compromised immune systems and individuals with underlying respiratory conditions should avoid oily areas.

Prevent pets from entering oil-contaminated areas.
The EPA got hammered for telling New Yorkers, and thousands of tourists, the air was safe to breathe around Ground Zero, in the days after 9/11 when it was clearly not. Maybe this time they decided they won't take part in helping to expose Americans to the equivalent of a mass poisoning.

"Today, I Weep For My Country"

Senator Robert Byrd was called everything from a traitor to treasonous, anti-American to Saddam comfort giver for this incredible, powerful speech the night American bombs began to slam in Baghdad, back in March 2003.

Senator Byrd was right, of course, about almost everything in this speech. Which is why he was attacked so viciously, ruthlessly, by the media. Too much fucking truth :

Nobody listened, he was just a crazy old man, who'd seen it all before during World War 2, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf War I, decades of the war machine devouring trillions of American wealth, and millions of American lives, for too little gain.

Senator Byrd died today.

Where are these voices of opposition to war, all war, today in the American government? Who is asking these questions?

Attempted Coup Unfolds In Australia

By Darryl Mason

A dramatic night in Australian politics, as the right wing of the Rudd Labor government staged an early evening, non-military coup against the prime minister.

This is how ABC News Online broke the story just before 7pm Sydney time :

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's leadership is under siege tonight from some of the Labor Party's most influential factional warlords.

The ABC has learned that powerful party figures have been secretly canvassing numbers for a move to dump the Prime Minister and replace him with his deputy, Julia Gillard.

It appears she has rebuffed the advances, but it is a measure of the disquiet which has been building in the party since Mr Rudd's approval ratings began their precipitous slide in April.

Ministers and party members have been lining up all week to voice their support for Mr Rudd but behind the scenes, party leaders have been contemplating a leadership change.

Although Mr Rudd looks likely to survive the challenge, news of the attempted coup will undoubtedly weaken him.

It is understood that the only thing holding the Prime Minister up is that his deputy refuses to join in a bid to bring him down.

That story has been replaced by updates, and the words "attempted coup" have now disappeared from nearly all the frenzied reporting.

Ex-Australian Rupert Murdoch's media has been all but screaming for prime minister Kevin Rudd to be replaced by his deputy, Julia Gillard, for months, declaring across its pages the Rudd government was "over" shortly after prime minister Kevin Rudd's record breaking popularity ratings began to nosedive.

In a dramatic press conference at 9pm Wednesday night, prime minister Kevin Rudd announced that he would let the Labor Party vote for him or Julia Gillard to lead the country to the next election. Gillard is publicly backed by the Murdoch media, right factions of the Labor Party and one of Australia's biggest unions. The conservative opposition will now demand the federal election be held immediately, in the wake of such chaos and disruption, as they should.

The Murdoch media were delighted with the "attempted coup" :

"Defiant Kevin Rudd." Or as he was otherwise known until only a few hours ago, the democratically elected prime minister of Australia.

President Obama points out the fundamental hypocrisy of conservatives and Tea Partiers who demand an end to 'Big Government' :
“I think it’s fair to say, if six months ago, before this spill had happened, I had gone up to Congress and I had said we need to crack down a lot harder on oil companies and we need to spend more money on technology to respond in case of a catastrophic spill, there are folks up there, who will not be named, who would have said this is classic, big-government overregulation and wasteful spending.”

“Some of the same folks who have been hollering and saying ‘do something’ are the same folks who, just two or three months ago, were suggesting that government needs to stop doing so much.”

“Some of the same people who are saying the president needs to show leadership and solve this problem are some of the same folks who, just a few months ago, were saying this guy is trying to engineer a takeover of our society through the federal government that is going to restrict our freedoms.”

Deaths Of 'Conspiracy' Blogger & Artist Boyfriend To Be Subject Of New Film By Bret Easton Ellis & Gus Van Sant

By Darryl Mason

It's just a short snippet in a longer story from the LA Times about author/screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis' new novel, Imperial Bedrooms, a sequel o his 25 year old debut Less Than Zero, but it caught my attention like nothing else has in days :
(Bret Easton Ellis) is currently at work on a script based on artist Jeremy Blake and his girlfriend, writer-blogger Theresa Duncan, titled "The Golden Suicides."
Gus Van Sant (Last Days, Elephant) is currently producing the movie of Ellis' screenplay, which he hopes Van Sant will eventually agree to direct.

Ellis on The Golden Suicides :
I connected with the story a lot, so it was really exciting and emotional to write it. I didn’t find it depressing. I thought it was the most difficult thing I’ve had to write…I didn’t want to make up anything. I wanted the script to really follow what happened

Long-term readers of Your New Reality may well remember the name Theresa Duncan.

She was a controversial New York City arts blogger, who died after detailing her fears of being pursued, and hounded, by Scientologists. Her partner of 12 years, artist Jeremy Blake, who shared some of her fears of Scientologists and doubts about the official government version of the events of 9/11, died a week later.

In the last years of Theresa Duncan's life, she developed a deep interest in government and military programs targeted at American citizens, including the CointelPro and MKULTRA programs, once derided as merely the delusions of paranoids and conspiracy theorists, but since proven (through declassified documents and files) to have been very real, and very dangerous.

Theresa Duncan spent the last months of her life apparently all too aware that her life was in danger, or close to ending, at least according to posts and the poetry she featured on her blog.

I wrote a long piece about Theresa Duncan's death on Your New Reality, which you can read here.

From a post she wrote shortly before her death :
So it must be clear by now...that MK-ULTRA (and even weird, disinfo-saturated Project Monarch) are the ne plus ultra weapons of past decades, as if all the Cold War missile paranoia was just a smoke screen for all the body snatchers the Pentagon was beginning to hatch.

Mind control and psychological warfare are the primary weapons that led to our current Monarch Moment. Cults like Scientology and mind control-manufactured Monarch girlies and Operation Mockingbird are the fungus among us that has been eating away at the foundations of democracy for decades....

At the end of the post she linked to this video :

Theresa Duncan's excellent arts, philosophy and poetry blog, The Wit Of The Staircase, is thankfully still online and well worth exploring, if you're interested in that kind of thing. And if you're not, her writing will probably get you interested.

No word on how far away The Golden Suicides movie will be, but as it hasn't yet started casting or shooting, it is unlikely to hit cinemas before 2012.

Infamous Australian Murdoch Columnist Demands : "Free Gaza!"

Even Murdoch columnist Andrew Bolt, who gets free trips to Israel and then 'forgets' to mention so in a Daily Telegraph column where he recited IDF propaganda about the Gaza Flotilla slaughter without question, apparently has had enough of Israel's cruel, internationally condemned trade blockade of 1.5 million Palestinians :

Michael Rivero, who often links 2 or 3 times a week to Andrew Bolt articles on his popular website What Really Happened (contributing greatly to Bolt's claimed "2 Million Hits A Month!"), appears to agree with Bolt in this letter to the New York Times (excerpts) :
While I share the world’s revulsion at Israel’s attack on an unarmed aid flotilla in international waters I take strong exception to the comment made by the authors of this piece in the third paragraph. HAMAS did not stage a coup d’Ă©tat against the Palestinian authority. HAMAS won the elections, and it was FATAH that tried to forcibly remove HAMAS, but failed.

An official Israel government documented reported by McClatchy news only yesterday confirms that the purpose of the blockade is not Israel’s defense, but to force the Gazans to surrender their elected government and accept Israeli rule via their proxy Fatah. That the list of items banned by Israel in Gaza included potato chips, shaving cream, candy and cookies demonstrates that defense is not the issue here. Israel’s attempt to coerce acceptance of alternate government in Gaza is a mirror of the attempt by the USSR in 1948 and 1949 to blockade West Berlin in order to starve that city into accepting Soviet rule via their proxy East Germany.

The world reacted quite differently back then, mounting the Berlin airlift, flying 13,000 tons of food and necessities into West Berlin daily on the principle that no government has a right to starve another people into changing their political system.

The Gaza Blockade : Why Trade Embargoes Don't Work

Chris Berg :
Restrictions on trade with Iraq failed to topple Saddam Hussein. They were some of the toughest sanctions in history. Yet before 2003, the only major destabilisation of the Iraq government came from the bombing in 1998.

Trade embargoes have failed in Burma, Iran, Zimbabwe, and Syria.

A 2007 study of 204 separate economic sanctions over the last century found they were successful in achieving regime change in only 31 per cent of cases. Their success at disrupting military adventures was successful in just 19 per cent.

And they can have some terrible unintended consequences.

Certainly, humanitarian goods are getting into Gaza. But simply sustaining the population isn't the main game.

The trade embargo stops Gazans from integrating themselves into the world economy. Their domestic economy is busted. It will remain busted as long as they are unable to trade. Imports to Gaza may be strictly limited, but exports from Gaza are effectively banned.

The Palestinian Trade Centre claims that, as a consequence, the number of private sector firms has shrunk at least 70%. In 2005, around 25,000 people were employed in Gaza's clothing industry. That number is now around 230. Unemployment in Gaza is nearing 50 per cent. 80 per cent of the population relies on aid. Recent Iraqi history has taught us sudden mass unemployment is not a harbinger of peace.

US Media Terrified Of Mentioning USS Liberty

Never heard of the USS Liberty?

Do you know that an American naval vessel was attacked by Israel in international waters, 43 years ago today, resulting in the deaths of dozens of American sailors, seriously wounding more than 170?

If you haven't, don't feel bad. Most Americans under the age of 40 haven't heard of it either. It has been all but written out of official American history.

This American veteran has now survived TWO attacks in international waters by Israel. And the US government has been all but silent, both times.

"Machine-gunning of life rafts."

If you're an American,, why don't you call your local radio station or TV station right now, ask for a news producer, and ask them why they aren't talking about this important anniversary.

Don't be surprised if, like you, they'd never heard of the USS Liberty, either.

It's been written out of American history. Like it never happened.

Like they wish it never happened.

But it did.

UPDATE : I just Google News-checked "USS Liberty". Outside of bloggers and veterans' news sites, there was barely four mentions of this anniversary, small mentions, On This Day In History type mentions, nothing substantial.

Like it never happened.
What If Your Friends Like Your Digital Avatar More Than The Real You?

Roger Highfield, editor of New Scientist :
Central to our identity is how we judge our own looks and how other people perceive us.

Jose Bentham, a 39-year-old banker, and Susan Golton, a 22-year-old design student...were scanned by a computer artist and their typical vital statistics "printed out" by a 3D digital printer, so their naked paper sculptures could be displayed in all their life-size glory in the new exhibit.

As part of its exploration of identity, the gallery will also give visitors the chance to play around with their own, by using computers to morph their faces and voice-boxes so they look and sound different. It is all good fun, and guaranteed to draw in the crowds. But what intrigues me is the tantalising possibility that our identity – who we are – could eventually become completely divorced from our physical appearance.

There is now a torrent of personal information about almost every one of us swirling around on the internet, from digital snaps to tweets to Facebook profiles. This has led to discussions about how you can ''capture'' an individual's personality by uploading personal material and memories and blending all this with information to create an "avatar" – an electronic simulation that is as close to your true personality as possible.

Lifenaut, an American company, offers the chance to make ''a rich back-up" of your life by storing photographs, voice recordings and information submitted by you.

...such initiatives are only the beginning. And what fascinates me in particular is the idea that an avatar stitched together from crumbs of personal information harvested from across the web might behave, or evolve, in a different way to one that you created as a straight copy of yourself – in other words, it could be a truer version of you than you are able, or willing, to reveal.

The rise of such digital alter egos could warp our ideas about identity, and ultimately even challenge our thinking about what it means to be human. That's something to think about the next time you log on.

The Beginning Of The End Of The War On Afghanistan

'Reformed' Taliban will include 'reformed' Al Qaeda, and whoever else has to paid off to stop killing NATO troops :
Backing Afghan President Hamid Karzai's efforts to 'reach out' to the Taliban through the peace jirga, President Obama's Special Envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke has said that Washington accepts that the final political solution in the war ravaged country could involve 'reformed' Taliban in the government if certain "red lines" are respected.

"The door is open...." he said.

"Let me be clear on one thing, everybody understands that this war will not end in a clear-cut military victory. It's not going to end on the deck of a battleship like World War II, or Dayton, Ohio, like the Bosnian war."

He also noted that while it was impossible to negotiate with Al-Qaeda, the case was different with the Taliban.

"It's going to have some different ending from that, some form of political settlements are necessary ... you can't have a settlement with Al Qaeda, you can't talk to them, you can't negotiate with them, it's out of the question. But it is possible to talk to the Taliban leaders," Holbrooke said.

Former American Marine Says He Forcefully Took Pistol, Rifle From Israeli Commados Because They Were Executing Gaza Flotilla Passengers In Front Of Him

Ken O'Keefe :

I joined the defence of the (Gaza Flotilla lead ship) Mavri Mamarra understanding that violence could be used against us and that we may very well be compelled to use violence in self defence.

I said this straight to Israeli agents, probably of Mossad or Shin Bet, and I say it again now, on the morning of the attack I was directly involved in the disarming of two Israeli Commandos. This was a forcible, non-negotiable, separation of weapons from commandos who had already murdered two brothers that I had seen that day.

One brother with a bullet entering dead center in his forehead, in what appeared to be an execution. I knew the commandos were murdering when I removed a 9mm pistol from one of them. I had that gun in my hands and as an ex-US Marine with training in the use of guns it was completely within my power to use that gun on the commando who may have been the murderer of one of my brothers. But that is not what I, nor any other defender of the ship did. I took that weapon away, removed the bullets, proper lead bullets, separated them from the weapon and hid the gun.

I did this in the hopes that we would repel the attack and submit this weapon as evidence in a criminal trial against Israeli authorities for mass murder. I also helped to physically separate one commando from his assault rifle, which another brother apparently through into the sea. I and hundreds of others know the truth that makes a mockery of the brave and moral Israeli military.

We had in our full possession, three completely disarmed and helpless commandos. These boys were at our mercy, they were out of reach of their fellow murderers, inside the ship and surrounded by 100 or more men. I looked into the eyes of all three of these boys and I can tell you they had the fear of God in them. They looked at us as if we were them, and I have no doubt they did not believe there was any way they would survive that day. They looked like frightened children in the face of an abusive father. But they did not face an enemy as ruthless as they.

Instead the woman provided basic first aid, and ultimately they were released, battered and bruised for sure, but alive.

It's Only A Lie If We Get Caught, And By Then It's Too Late

An (IDF) Israel Defence Forces' official press release, before media scrutiny :

The same IDF press release after media scrutiny, which amounted to two phone calls and a request for the evidence backing the claim to be provided to journalists. The IDF admitted they had no evidence, and so retracted the claim of 'Al Qaeda mercenaries'.

By then, of course, much of the western mainstream media had already published and aired official IDF propaganda.

It's no surprise, then, that the IDF and its spokespeople are making themselves very hard to reach now, for even the most well-resourced news organisations.

How many more outright lies have they bamboozled the media with about what happened during the Massacre In the Mediterranean?

How many in the media knowingly, willingly, then allowed themselves to be part of the monumentally failed attempt to bamboozle the majority of people who longer rely on the corporate mainstream media to tell them the truth?

Robert Fisk :

The amazing thing in all this is that so many Western journalists – and I'm including the BBC's pusillanimous coverage of the Gaza aid ships – are writing like Israeli journalists, while many Israeli journalists are writing about the killings with the courage that Western journalists should demonstrate.

.
The Dead Zone

The grim, appalling reality of the Louisiana coastline that BP is hiding from you, and President Obama :
"When we found this dolphin it was filled with oil. Oil was just pouring out of it. It was the saddest darn thing to look at.

"There is a lot of coverup for BP. They specifically informed us that they don't want these pictures of the dead animals. They know the ocean will wipe away most of the evidence.

"The things I've seen: They just aren't right. All the life out here is just full of oil.

"When you see some of the things I've seen, it would make you sick. No living creature should endure that kind of suffering."

"I saw a pelican under water with only its wing sticking out. I grabbed it and lifted it out of the water. It was just covered in oil. It was struggling so hard to survive. We did what we could for it.

"Nature is cruel, but what's happening here is crueler."

Go Here To Read The Story From The New York Daily News

The latest attempt by robots to stop the BP Gulf Gusher have failed. The oil is pouring from the deepest well ever drilled at an even greater rate. The oil is saturating the Louisiana coastline, it's reached Alabama and tomorrow it is expected to start washing up on the beaches of Florida.

Hurricane season begins today. Meteorologists are predicting dozens of large and small storms. Scientists can only can only guess at how monumental the disaster will become if, or when, the hurricanes pick up the oil and spread it further inland.

Meanwhile, BP is denying claims by dozens of scientists, and marine specialists, that huge clouds of oil are hidden from view below the surface of the Gulf :

BP's chief executive, Tony Hayward, said it had no evidence of underwater oil clouds. "The oil is on the surface," he said. "Oil has a specific gravity that's about half that of water. It wants to get to the surface because of the difference in specific gravity."

Hayward's assertion flies in the face of studies by scientists at universities in Florida, Georgia and Mississippi, among other institutions, who say they have detected huge underwater plumes of oil, including one 120 metres (400ft) deep about 50 miles from the destroyed rig.

BP is lying, and deceiving the White House and the American people, over the size of the spread of oil, because it faces fines per barrel spilled, per day.

The US Military said they have no technology greater than that available to BP to stop the flow.

The worst case scenario, for now, is that the oil will continue to pour into the Gulf, tens of thousands of barrels per day, until Christmas at least :
Ending the year with a still-gushing well would mean about 4 million barrels of oil spilled into the Gulf, based on the government’s current estimate of 12,000 to 19,000 barrels leaking a day. That would wipe out marine life deep at sea near the leak and elsewhere in the Gulf, and along hundreds of miles of coastline....

So much crude pouring into the ocean may alter the chemistry of the sea, with unforeseeable results....

Is It Time For Corporate Criminals To Face The Death Penalty For Their Crimes?

By Darryl Mason

Source

How many Americans in Louisiana and Alabama would oppose the introduction of a death penalty for those found responsible for multi-billion dollar corporate negligence?

Raw Story :

President Barack Obama on Tuesday vowed to hold the culprits of the US oil disaster legally accountable, and promised to change the law if necessary to prevent history from repeating itself.

Terming the massive spill the "greatest environmental disaster of its kind in our history," Obama said the US government had an "obligation" to find out what caused the explosion of the BP operated Deepwater Horizon rig in April.

He raised the prospect of court action against those responsible for the spill, as Attorney General Eric Holder visited the Gulf to assess legal options.

"If the laws on our books are insufficient to prevent such a spill, the laws must change."
Change them to include, if a death penalty is going too far, a public flogging, preferably live to air on CNN. It's the only way they'll learn to be responsible, and value something more than profits.

The UK Guardian :
BP has now lost £44bn of its value since 20 April, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded.

City experts believe the combination of the continuing leak and the prospect of huge future legal costs and political damage in the US could be disastrous for the company.

Dougie Youngson, oil analyst at Arbuthnot, said: "This situation has now gone far beyond concerns of BP's chief executive Tony Hayward being fired, or shareholder dividend payouts being cut – it's got the real smell of death. This could break BP."

BP's going to try again with the undersea robots. If the robots succeed in cutting off the monumental flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico (and soon the Florida Keys), President Barack Obama should give the robots fucking medals on the White House lawn. We are now relying on robots to stop what humans cannot.

BP has reportedly poured some $1 billion into fixing the worst environmental disaster in American history, and what could soon enough become a world emergency. Estimates on how much the undersea oil gusher could cost BP in liabilities, and further attempts to shut off the gusher, are already reaching $12 billion.

The Guardian reports BP has already been hit with more than 30,000 claims for compensation :
....mostly from businesses in the US states of Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida, which involve loss of earnings or bereavement suffered by families of the 11 workers killed when the rig caught fire.
BP vice president of deepwater developments David Eyten, in 2005 :

“IF we’ve learned anything so far about the deepwater Gulf of Mexico, it is that it contains surprises. And that means an operator needs depth — depth in terms of resources and expertise — to create the capability to respond to the unexpected. ”

And yet, even though it was his job, BP didn't "create the capability" needed to even get close to dealing with the oil gusher now threatening, and already destroying, hundreds of kilometres of American coastline, killing birds, dolphins, turtles, marshlands and tens of thousands of American jobs.

BP began a deepwater drilling operation knowing they would not be able to adequately deal with a massive spill more than 5000 feet down in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

BP has purposely underestimated the size of the oil gusher, or gushers (some oil industry experts claim there is another gusher a few miles away from the main site), for weeks, fearing, and trying to delay, what is now happening to their share price.

The New York Times :
As BP struggled last week to stanch the flow of spewing oil at the Deepwater Horizon rig, it has become clear that the pressure to dig deeper and faster from what Mr. Eyton then called a “frontier province” of oil exploration has in some ways outpaced the knowledge about how to do that safely. (And there is still the question of whether BP used all the tools and safety mechanisms available.)

Americans have long had an unswerving belief that technology will save us — it is the cavalry coming over the hill, just as we are about to lose the battle. And yet, as Americans watched scientists struggle to plug the undersea well over the past month, it became apparent that our great belief in technology was perhaps misplaced.

“Americans have a lot of faith that over the long run technology will solve everything, a sense that somehow we’re going to find a way to fix it,” said Andrew Kohut, president of the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press.

Henry Rollins :
As thousands of gallons of crude oil spew out from the ocean floor, there seem to be two sets of facts, both of them bad. There’s the set that British Petroleum gives us and then there’s the other set that occurs to you when you do the math, look at the oil-covered birds, consider ocean currents, hurricanes, the fragility of any aquatic ecosystem, and the true horror of what the short- and long-term effects will be. The more you think about it, the worse it gets. You don’t need to be a scientist or scholar to get your head around what this oil spill will mean for the planet.

....I don’t know how much worse it has to get. Oh wait, it got that worse since I started writing this sentence. This is the only planet you will ever live on.

Take a wild guess who convinced George W. Bush that starting wars in the Middle East would be "good for the economy"?

Oliver Stone interviews former Argentina president Néstor Kirchner :

It's 2021, you've been flagged as a lawbreaker and you're being pursued by dozens of these baby robodogs armed with tasers, where do you run?
